Online Meta Tags Checker
If you’re worried about your meta tags for your website, you can use this free online meta tag tester to make sure the search engines are getting all the right info about your site. I had been looking for a tool like this for a while and this one works great!
I use mostly wordpress installs to power my sites. With all the different themes and plugins I use, I never know what my tags in between my <head> and </head> look like.
A fleur de lis soap store I run, NolaSoap.com, just got a wordpress face lift. I wanted to make sure my meta tags were generating properly ( I had a hunch they weren’t), so I checked my site with the meta tag tool and got back some very helpful information.
In my case, I had a problem with:
- My <title> tag was working properly but I was warned it’s too short. I’m only using 12 characters when this tool says you can use between 65 and 125 characters in a title tag. I upped it to 42 characters on the homepage because, since my title is auto-generated, sub-pages will add title info to my base title which should always put me in the recommended range.
- I got a warning on my keywords tag. I am using 92 characters for my keywords and this tool tells me I can use up to 1,000 characters for my keywords tag. I don’t know if I could come up with 1,000 characters worth of keywords and, if I did, it would seem too spammy for my taste so I’m just going to leave that one as is.
I loaded up one of my subpages to see if they were generating the correct <head> tags and, low and behold, this tool is telling me I have no description meta tag. Well, now what do I do? I have a plugin installed that’s supposed to be creating this automatically. I pull up the page in my browser then “view source” to see if it’s in there but maybe garbled or something.
I see the problem with my description tag. The head info that came with the theme is not working for descriptions. I deleted the line of code that was not working and hoped that my seo plugin would take over and give me the correct results and it does.
