We humans are quite easy to manipulate and here’s some proof.  Your bartender is getting rich off of your awkwardness and possible alcohol problem.  The grocery store could give a fuck about your budget.  Restaurants want you to get in, eat, pay, and get the fuck out.  You’re a rat in a maze when you’re at the mall.  The casino wants to hypnotize you and zombie-fuck you out of every penny you have.
