Birthday Sing Along
Guest post written by Susan Nixon
My main job is working as a third grade teacher but I also work at a restaurant during the summer and on the weekends during the school year to help put my kids through college. It’s a big chain and serves mostly traditional American cuisine with a few different other styles mixed in like Italian and Cajun.
There aren’t that many restaurant options in our town so a lot of times people will come to the one I work at for birthdays and big celebrations like graduations. That means that me and the other wait staff get asked to sing to people with birthdays a lot and we do. I’m sure that not all of the people that we end up singing to are actually celebrating their birthdays because the desert that comes with the singing, a chocolate brownie sundae, is free. But we still sing.
About a week ago there was a family of about 10 people that came in and one of the ladies in it whispered to me after I took their orders that it was someone’s birthday. I thought she said it was an older lady who looked like her mom. After everyone had time to eat we came out with the desert and sang to the lady, except it ends up it was the little girl’s birthday instead.
The little girl took it better than most kids would have and we sang to her again to make up for it. I was pretty embarrassed by the mix-up and looked up miracle ear cost when I got home from work that night. I bought some hearing aids because I didn’t want something embarrassing like that, or even something worse, happening again at work.
