Old Spice Guy = Drop In Sales

It was reported that, during the runs of the “Old Spice Guy” ads, Old Spice body wash sales were down about 7%. I read 3 theories of why this happened in this article, but I think all 3 are wrong. Personally, I like some of the Old Spice body washes. I think it’s a quality product. They smell good and the soap isn’t watered down, so it lasts a long time making it a good value.

I think the reason sales went down was because of the old spice guy in the commercials coming across as intelligent, handsome, fit……..and black. It kind of goes like this (in a very stereotypical and honest way).

  1. Most white people don’t want to look, act, or smell like a black man.
  2. Many black people don’t want to (act) intelligent (being a smarty-art n*gg* just ain’t ‘hood).
  3. Most adult men aren’t very handsome OR fit. A “real man” isn’t seen by many men as this guy in the commercials. A “real man” comes home sweaty and tired from working hard, not riding a horse while on an exotic vacation.

Please keep the hate comments to a minimum. I’m not trying to be racist here. Get over yourself.
